The building will be placed as a compact, free-standing monolith – parallel to Handelskai & Engerthstrasse – on the competition site in place of the Dusika bike stadium that is to be demolished. The cube of the sports arena (84m / 114m / 27m) is spanned by 2 prestressed concrete frames in the quarter points and takes on a landmark function due to its unique characteristics for Vienna.
The challenge in the choice of the supporting structure lies in the column-free spans required by the contracting authority, which in terms of forces and costs elude the usual dimensions of building construction, but rather have to be located in the area of bridge construction.
Via a generously dimensioned forecourt along Engerthstrasse, visitors / spectators reach the respective, clearly structured functional areas via glazed foyers from the southwest. The urban planning was chosen so that the sports arena enters into an exciting dialogue with the surrounding buildings (office tower / long-distance bus terminal, shopping center).
